PopCap, the company behind Plants vs Zombies and Bejewelled has released the results of a survey it conducted about mobile gaming habits, and it shows that immobile gaming is probably a more accurate description of how we play.

78% of people asked spend some of their gaming time with a tablet on the sofa, with 51% enjoying some special time with the device while they’re laying on the bed. That compares to 43% who whip their iPad out for a twiddle while travelling.

The percentages are weighted more in the favour of travel when it comes to smartphone gamers, but around 50% of those asked agreed that their touchscreen device was the main way they played games in the house.

“We already know that people play mobile games ‘on the go,’ but now we are seeing mobile gamers largely favor their mobile devices for home use.” said Dennis Ryan, VP of Worldwide Publishing at PopCap in a press release. “If you add the fact we are seeing a deluge of new gamers coming in through mobile, we believe mobile gaming is invading the last bastion of video game consoles and personal computers: the home.”

Perhaps the most revealing statistic is that people who play games on smartphone and tablet are more likely to be late for meetings than people who favour one over the other. Proof that gamers are unreliable and shouldn’t be trusted. Maybe.
