After announcing that iOS 6 would feature their own maps app instead of Google’s, Apple has now revealed that the latest edition of their mobile operating system is going to be getting rid of the familiar YouTube icon that’s sat on iDevice screens since day one.

After 9to5Mac spotted that the app was missing from the latest beta build of iOS 6, Apple confirmed in a statement to The Verge that the YouTube app would not be preinstalled like it has been before.

“Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended, customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store.”

It could well work out better for heavy YouTube users, with an app that’s less intrinsically welded into the fabric of the OS likely to receive more frequent updates, something the current YouTube app hasn’t really received.

We’ll obviously keep you up to date with any more iOS 6 news as and when we get it.
