The Espeak Filter Program device is a Max4live audio effect for sequencing a bandpass filter bank with phonetic data. The term phoneme comes from linguistics and represents a unit of meaning within the sound system of a language. The plugin device concept that corresponds to this definition is the Filter Program, which represents a sequence of filter presets labelled phonemes. The Program Editor screen has controls to facilitate sequencing filter presets. The Phoneme Editor screen has a frequency, height bandwidth table as well as controls for performing data manipulation from within the device.

SETUP
1. copy the Espeak Filter Program.amxd device file to your Live library/Presets/Audio Effects/Max Audio Effect folder
2. copy scriptTool.jar to Max 5.0Cycling ’74javalib
3. copy the espeakdb file to the Max folder

IMPORTANT TIPS
The Phoneme Editor formant table has to have 7 rows. The filter banks on each channel are fixed at 7 filters at this time. Some filters will retain frequency, amplitude Q state if there are less than 7 rows in a formant table.
Instances of this device will cache all information about presets the first time it is loaded into a session and when the RESET button is clicked. Click the RESET button on the plug-in after changes are made in the Phoneme Editor or the Program Editor.

This device gives you a big floating window showing the play position of the currently playing clips in the first 7 tracks in your set. (or 7 tracks that you specify)

When I’m on stage, I find myself squinting at session view trying to watch the little loop status circles for each currently playing clip. When the longest clip I have playing ends, it’s usually time to play a different clip or scene. Some clips loop over and over in a scene of course, but the longest playing clip in a scene is usually the full length of the scene for me. I got tired of bending over squinting to see this visual reference, so I made this Max for Live device that gives you a big floating window showing the current play position of whatever clip is playing in your choice of 7 tracks.

With this device, I find i no longer have to bend over and squint at the screen on stage. I can jump around and have fun and at a glance, look at my laptop screen and see when the current scene is going to end and when to be ready to fire the next.

I only use 7 tracks of clips in my live show, plus a bunch of tracks hosting things I play live so there is only 7 clips supported in this device. But with a little tweaking you could easily add support for more.

As creator of maxforlive.com I often do lectures on Max for Live and every time I show this device, many people ask me for it. So here you go!

1. Add the device to any MIDI track
2. Select which tracks you want to monitor. If you don’t it will default to tracks 1 – 7 which should be fine for most people’s live shows.
3. Hit float if you don’t already see the floating window.
4. Play some clips and see it shows you their status. Enjoy.

Version 1.1: Added “Refresh” feature. Hit this button whenever you add new tracks, or delete tracks, or rename tracks to update the device.

Enjoy.

This device inverts the polarity of incoming sustain pedal messages.

It is designed for use with pedals whose polarity cannot otherwise be switched, such as certain footswitches from Yamaha.

Note that these footswitches are *not* common. In most cases, pedal polarity can be reversed via a switch on the pedal or by depressing it while plugging it in.

To use, simply insert an instance on the MIDI track which will be receiving sustain pedal messages.

Known issues:
This device works per track, meaning that it is necessary to add one to every MIDI track in your Live Set. A better solution would be a single device inserted anywhere which could process sustain pedal messages for all relevant tracks. This is probably possible via the Live API.
