HP Research Identifies New Era of Security Risk, Shifting Vulnerability Landscape

Cybersecurity report helps enterprises prioritize and reduce risks

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 19, 2012

HP today published the 2011 Top Cyber Security Risks Report, which identifies the growing sophistication and severity of security attacks and the resulting risks.

The report provides the information to help enterprises and governments understand the threat landscape and assess their security posture.

The report also indicates that hacker motivations are continuously changing due to the growing presence of “hacktivist” groups, such as Anonymous and LulzSec, which perform highly organized attacks in retaliation for perceived wrongdoing. In addition to changing motivation, advances in attack techniques have led to the increased “success” rate of security breaches. As a result, enterprises and governments are faced with new challenges in assessing and remediating risks.

Historically, the number of vulnerabilities disclosed in a year indicated the current state of the security industry and helped organizations prioritize their defenses. According to the report, pure vulnerability volume is no longer a valid indicator of the security risk landscape. While newly reported vulnerabilities in commercial applications continue to decline, a large number of vulnerabilities are unaccounted for, and are therefore undisclosed to the broader security industry.

“To protect organizations against a wide range of attacks, HP has established a global network of security researchers who look for vulnerabilities that were not publicly disclosed,” said Michael Callahan, vice president, Worldwide Product and Solution Marketing, Enterprise Security Products, HP. “The intelligence gained from this research group is built into HP enterprise security solutions in an effort to proactively reduce risk.”

Shifting vulnerability landscape
Disclosure of new vulnerabilities in commercial applications has slowly declined since 2006, dropping nearly 20 percent in 2011 from the previous year. However, data from the report demonstrates that this decline does not signify decreased risk.

This decline is due to several factors, including the advent of a private market for sharing vulnerabilities. In addition, the proliferation of custom-built web applications, such as retail web sites, has created a market for unique vulnerability exploits that require advanced expertise to locate and address.

Key findings from the report include:

Although vulnerability reports have declined, attacks have more than doubled as measured by HP TippingPoint Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) in the second half of 2011.

Nearly 24 percent of new vulnerabilities disclosed in commercial applications in 2011 have a severity rating of 8 to 10. These vulnerabilities can result in a remote code execution, the most dangerous type of attack.

Roughly 36 percent of all vulnerabilities are in commercial web applications.

Approximately 86 percent of web applications are vulnerable to an injection attack, which is when hackers access internal databases through a website.

Due to a high success rate, web exploit toolkits continued to be popular in 2011. These “packaged” attack frameworks are traded or sold online, enabling hackers to access enterprise IT systems and steal sensitive data. For example, the Blackhole Exploit Kit is used by most cybercriminals, and reached an unusually high infection rate of more than 80 percent in late November 2011.

To combat changing security risks, HP offers the HP Security Intelligence and Risk Management (SIRM) platform, an integrated platform of risk-driven security solutions. HP SIRM delivers visibility across traditional, mobile and cloud environments enabling enterprises to apply adaptive security defenses based on specific organizational risk.

Methodology
The Cyber Security Risks Report has been published every six months since 2009 by HP DVLabs, a premier research organization for vulnerability analysis and discovery. HP DVLabs analyzed security exploit data from thousands of deployed HP TippingPoint Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS). The data was then correlated with information from the following sources:

The Zero Day Initiative, a research program managed by HP DVLabs that is designed to improve security by identifying software flaws which have led to cyber attacks and security breaches.

Open Source Vulnerability Database, an independent and open source database created by and for the security-vulnerabilities community.

Web application data from the HP Fortify Application Security Center (ASC) Web Security Research Group, which helps security professionals, quality assurance (QA) specialists and developers facilitate the security of web applications across the enterprise, HP Software Professional Services and HP Fortify on Demand.

Data from HP DVLabs is also fed into HP Information Security Pulse, a free mobile application that enables IT security professionals to monitor current cyberthreat trends in real time. The application is currently available for the HP webOS ecosystem and will soon be available on iOS and Android mobile tablet devices.

On Wednesday, May 2, at 11 a.m. CT, Jason Jones, engineer, Advanced Security Intelligence, HP DVLabs, and Adam Hils, senior product manager, HP Fortify, will present the Top Security Threats and Trends: 2011 Cyber Security Risks Report webinar.

HP’s premier client event, HP Discover, will take place June 4-7 in Las Vegas.

HP’s annual enterprise security event, HP Protect, will take place Sept. 10-12 in Nashville, Tenn.

HP Enables Telecoms to Deploy and Manage Mobile Applications for Business Customers

Enterprise “app store” is heart of mobility platform

	LONDON, April 18, 2012

HP today announced a mobility platform for communications service providers (CSPs) that enables them to help enterprise customers increase productivity by supporting employee use of smartphones and tablets.

The HP Enterprise Mobility platform enables enterprises to provide internal mobile applications (apps) to employees so they can access company data quickly, easily and securely on their personal mobile devices.

The core components of the HP Enterprise Mobility platform are:

HP Enterprise Mobile App Store enables CSPs to help enterprises create, certify, distribute and manage ”mobilized” versions of company apps for employees. Hosted at the CSP site and managed for the enterprise, the HP Enterprise Mobile App Store provides employees an easy-to-use portal for downloading apps.

Multichannel capability supports personalized employee access, regardless of device. Employees can easily browse for apps. Multiple languages are supported to enable regional app stores.

Multicatalog management enables enterprises to offer apps to different kinds of users by structuring access based on employee location, job type or other criteria.

Application life cycle management enables enterprises to refresh apps for all device types, track usage, and decommission apps at end of life.

Integrated mobile device testing ensures that apps perform properly across device types and in varied usage scenarios.

HP Enterprise Mobility Gateway enables CSPs to help enterprise employees access the right enterprise data at the right time by connecting mobile applications with an enterprise’s back-end systems. Available on the customer premises and as a service from the CSP, the gateway enables developers to create data-rich apps that run effectively even when bandwidth is limited.

High-performance access is enabled with server- and client-side caching, smart browsing, and offline viewing of large data sets.

Secure exposure of back-end systems and data to mobile applications is enabled by user authentication and authorization.

Lifecycle management of programming interfaces of back-end systems is facilitated with usage and reporting tools.

Composite service development enables mobile apps to access and combine data from multiple back-end systems to create aggregated, high-value information for mobile users.

“Service providers are at a point where they need an enterprise service delivery platform, not just a telco service delivery platform,” said Glen Ragoonanan, lead analyst, Infrastructure Solutions and SDP Strategies, Analysys Mason. “It makes sense to work with a partner like HP that has both telco and IT heritage and can bring the two worlds together.”

Based on the widely deployed HP Service Delivery Platform (SDP), the HP Enterprise Mobility platform features a flexible service-oriented architecture. CSPs can adapt the core HP components to suit specific, complex needs, and they can integrate other HP and third-party solutions to further enhance functionality.

“CSPs must invent new business models to win in a 4G world,” said David Sliter, vice president and general manager, Communications, Media and Entertainment, HP Enterprise Services. “HP’s offering enables CSPs to generate new revenue by helping enterprises tap the productivity potential of smartphones and tablets used by employees.”

In addition to offering mobility services to enterprises, CSPs can use the HP platform to manage mobility services for their own employees, including the development and distribution of new apps.

Designed for CSPs to offer to their enterprise clients, the HP Enterprise Mobility platform also will be sold directly to enterprises by HP, as an on-premises solution.

The HP Enterprise Mobility platform complements previously announced offerings in the HP Mobile Application Services portfolio.

HP Helps Organizations Enhance Customer Engagement via Social Networks

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 17, 2012

HP today announced enhancements to its customer relationship management (CRM) services that help clients engage in conversations with customers and influencers through social media channels, gaining valuable insights that drive business growth.

Facebook, Twitter and other social networks have changed consumer behavior while adding a layer of complexity to the company-customer relationship. Traditional CRM programs and architectures, designed prior to the emergence of social networks, hinder organizations from leveraging these outlets to develop strategies and create a framework for expansion.

The new HP Social Enterprise Services help organizations quickly implement a social CRM program to improve communications and engagement with customers, while also helping them to better understand those customers. By leveraging advanced analytics from HP Labs, the company’s central research arm, as well as Vertica and Autonomy, both HP companies, for structured and unstructured data, the service also improves contact center performance and support clients’ top-line growth.

HP Social Enterprise Services incorporate social media channels into existing contact center channels to provide organizations with a holistic view of their customers. By integrating social media strategy, process, information, analytics, technology and high-performance contact center teams, organizations can rapidly deliver new products and services that are aligned with customer requirements, establishing a solid competitive advantage.

“Leading companies, particularly in business-to-consumer industries, have recognized the importance of tapping into customer-to-customer communications and engaging in these social conversations,” said Joe Outlaw, principal contact center analyst, Frost Sullivan. “Drawing on its strong analytics capabilities and deep CRM experience, HP has created a uniquely powerful social CRM service. This service offers companies a full set of tools and methodologies designed for rapid start-up and seamless broadening and deepening of social CRM programs as strategies dictate.”

Part of HP Customer Engagement Management, HP Social Enterprise Services provide two service models: HP Agent Services to engage with customers in social media channels and HP Social Media Analysis to mine the social web for information and insights on customers. Key features include:

Listening Service – monitors a client brand or product in social media channels to identify new engagement opportunities.

Analysis Service – leverages various analytics to gain insight into client, competitor and industry trends to refine the company’s social media strategy.

Routing Service – directs engagement opportunities to internal stakeholders, such as customer service, marketing, sales and product development for prompt action.

Engagement Service – leverages insights derived from analytics to rapidly respond to customer inquiries and comments in social media channels.

Reporting Service – provides daily snapshots, weekly summaries and monthly reports of insights, analysis and opportunities to measure program success.

When bundled, HP Agent Services and HP Social Media Analysis allow clients to manage customer relationships more effectively by keeping pace with social media and analytical technologies.

“Social media has become a game changer in company-customer interactions, and it needs to be integrated into an organization’s contact center,” said Danila Meirlaen, vice president, Business Process Outsourcing, HP. “HP Social Enterprise Services take customer relations to a new level with analytic tools that make it easy to engage with customers via social networks, turning those interactions into positive outcomes for both the customer and organization.”

Depending on the client’s specific needs, the HP Social Enterprise Services framework is designed to leverage other pan-HP tools such as the HP Social Intelligence Solution and proprietary assets from HP Labs.

Pricing and availability
HP Social Enterprise Services are now available worldwide. Pricing for HP Agent Services varies depending on client need. Pricing for Social Media Analysis Services is subscription based and depends on the volume of services selected.

System enhancements expedite healthcare claims for veterans

PALO ALTO, California, March 6, 2012

HP today announced that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has selected HP Enterprise Services to continue as a prime contractor for the Compensation and Pension Record Interchange (CAPRI) support program to help deliver quality healthcare to veterans.

HP will provide overall project management, business process analysis and testing services as well as software design, development and support services. The contract extends HP’s 10-year involvement with the CAPRI application, and the company’s relationship with the VA, which has spanned more than 12 years.

The CAPRI application enhances the efficiency of claims processing by allowing the Veterans Health Administration and the Veterans Benefits Administration to share medical data through the Bidirectional Health Information Exchange system. The CAPRI software provides online access to medical data, which enhances the timeliness of the benefits determination. This will facilitate expedited claims processing and improved quality of healthcare for disabled veterans.

“Providing quality healthcare in a timely manner to veterans is a top priority for the VA,” said Marilyn Crouther, senior vice president and general manager, U.S. Public Sector, HP Enterprise Services. “By enhancing the CAPRI application, HP and the VA will provide faster access to healthcare for veterans by expanding the VA’s information exchange network and expediting the claims cycle.”

Over the term of the contract, HP will team with small, veteran-owned businesses Systems Made Simple Inc. and V-Tech Solutions Inc. to complete the project.

In support of the CAPRI Program, HP will deliver comprehensive, secure technology solutions to support the VA’s patient-centric delivery of high-quality healthcare to the country’s valued veterans.

In a world of continuous connectivity, HP enables agencies to become
Instant-On Governments with technology, security and innovation embedded throughout their organizations to deliver immediate services to citizens and clients.
HP today announced an integrated platform of risk-driven security solutions that provides enterprises clear visibility across traditional, mobile and cloud environments, and enables them to apply adaptive security defenses based on specific organizational risks.

Modern security threats are increasingly complex, featuring multiple attack vectors that target traditional, mobile and cloud environments. As organizations extend their infrastructures, they require the same level of security controls and safeguards as those that protect their internal infrastructures.(1) These challenges make it crucial for enterprises to understand how best to manage and prioritize security risks across their diverse IT landscapes.

The
HP Security Intelligence and Risk Management (SIRM) platform bridges the gap between security and IT operations, helping organizations to move beyond a bolted-on, single-purpose product strategy. With the expanded HP SIRM platform, HP is delivering on its first major milestone for security since it brought together market-leading products from ArcSight, Fortify and TippingPoint to
form the
HP Enterprise Security Products group last year.

“Today’s attacks are so complex and difficult to detect, a traditional approach to security just can’t provide the level of insight necessary to secure the extended enterprise,” said Tom Reilly, vice president and general manager, Enterprise Security Products, HP. “The HP Security Intelligence and Risk Management platform offers visibility into diverse security environments as well as contextual intelligence to proactively manage risk from applications to network – and IT governance.”

Offering a single view into business risks

Enterprises have struggled with the inability to accurately assess security needs and investments. HP is addressing this problem by providing visibility across security assets in the context of business-critical processes and applications with:

HP EnterpriseView – provides C-level executives with a dynamic dashboard and prioritized heat-map view of risk across the enterprise, bridging security and IT operations. This single view enables security executives to proactively address the highest business risks and rapidly deploy adaptive defenses.

Addressing application risk from traditional to mobile environments
Mobile platforms, as well as applications pushed to the web, create complex attack surfaces that must be protected. HP enables enterprises to extend application security to mobile devices through static application security testing (SAST), dynamic application security testing (DAST) and monitoring solutions, including:

HP Application Security Monitor (AppSM) – gives IT leaders visibility into application security threats, and shortens the time needed to deploy monitoring by significantly reducing costly custom programming. HP AppSM delivers centralized searching, reporting and analysis covering Java/.Net applications across multiple environments, including mobile.

HP Mobile Application Security – protects the mobile application ecosystem through line-of-code precision to identify potential vulnerabilities for applications built for Apple iOS and Google™ Android devices.

HP TippingPoint Next-Generation Intrusion Prevention System (NGIPS) – delivers protection against complex application threats in conjunction with the HP SIRM platform. Clients benefit from enhanced reputation-based blocking and advanced application control.

Addressing emerging risks associated with cloud adoption

As enterprises adopt cloud computing, protecting the extended infrastructure becomes a barrier for adoption. To address this challenge, HP offers enterprise-class security solutions for complex cloud environments, including:

HP Cloud Connections Partner Program – provides visibility into user activity within Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) environments, delivering a centralized view and enabling reporting that spans on-premise to cloud-based environments.

HP Supports Patient Care at Runnymede Healthcare Centre in Canada

	MISSISSAUGA, Ontario, Feb. 29, 2012

HP today announced that Runnymede Healthcare Centre has chosen
HP Converged Infrastructure to support patient care as well as reduce IT administration time and costs.

Toronto-based Runnymede, which provides specialized medical, therapeutic and outpatient services to people affected by long-term chronic conditions, was subjected to considerable network downtime with an outdated data infrastructure. This resulted in delays when hospital staff accessed applications supporting patient care and in unreliable communication between staff and patients.

Since implementing
HP LeftHand Storage and
HP ProLiant Servers at its new facility, Runnymede no longer experiences data center downtime, which has greatly improved IT staff productivity. In addition, the hospital can fulfill its strategic vision of implementing an electronic patient record.

“The time we spent maintaining and repairing our old data infrastructure was eating into the time we needed to focus on applications required by clinical staff to improve patient care,” said Angela Copeland, chief information officer and privacy officer, Runnymede Healthcare Centre. “With HP Converged Infrastructure solutions, we’re now able to focus on clinical applications since the only attention our data infrastructure requires is the short time it takes to add capacity.”

HP LeftHand Storage, part of the HP
Converged Storage portfolio, fuses scale-out storage software with HP ProLiant server hardware. This physical and virtual IT solution ensures high availability to reduce the risk of downtime. Business continuity is ensured by replicating data across a cluster of storage nodes. This provides continuous data availability in the event of an outage.

HP LeftHand Storage deployed at Runnymede applies this innovative approach to eliminate single points of failure across the storage area network, reducing risk without driving up costs. HP LeftHand Storage also reduces costs by allowing Runnymede to purchase storage based on its current needs, with the flexibility to add more capacity and performance as needed without disruptions.

In addition to HP Converged Storage, the healthcare provider chose
HP ProLiant rack-mount servers as part of its HP Converged Infrastructure. These physical HP servers are virtualized with
VMware vSphere to increase IT flexibility to scale up as hospital requirements expand.

“Runnymede struggled with an unstable IT environment that hampered access to applications that aid in patient care, which is the lifeblood for healthcare providers,” said Jeff Wilson, national sales manager, Storage, HP Canada. “Now with reliable access to data, staff can concentrate on providing the best possible care with confidence that the Centre’s data needs will scale with HP Converged Infrastructure.”

HP Converged Infrastructure is a core component of an

HP today announced that the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has selected HP Enterprise Services to support the GSA Managed Service Office (MSO) in managing the identities of more than 500,000 federal employees and contractors at more than 90 federal agencies, commissions and boards.

The new one-year contract, which includes two one-year option periods, is valued at up to $47 million if all options are exercised.

The GSA MSO USAccess program is a major provider of Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credentials to federal agencies. In addition to federal agencies that provide their own PIV credentials, the GSA MSO and HP will deliver identity credentials needed to help secure federal facilities, systems and applications as part of the government-wide Homeland Security Presidential Directive-12 (HSPD-12) program.

As part of the agreement, the GSA MSO has implemented the
PIV credentials issued under the USAccess program are secure and reliable, and comply with government-established HSPD-12 standards.

“Protecting government facilities and information system assets is critical to national security,” said Keith Blodgett, vice president, Leveraged Delivery and Enterprise Clients, U.S. Public Sector, HP Enterprise Services. “HP will continue to provide and manage the HSPD-12 identity credentials necessary to help secure these vitally important assets.”

Integration of HP Networking solutions into THOR•LO’s HP Converged Infrastructure enables growth, reduces costs

PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 23, 2012

HP today announced THOR•LO Inc. has successfully integrated HP networking
solutions into its

HP Converged Infrastructure deployment to streamline communications,
reduce costs and improve overall network productivity.

North Carolina-based
THOR•LO, a manufacturer of activity-specific socks, including those
designed for hiking, hunting, fishing and skiing, needed to improve network
efficiency to support growth and lower costs. After a thorough vendor review,
THOR•LO chose HP Networking solutions to extend the flexibility and
capabilities of its existing HP storage and server infrastructure.

In only six weeks, THOR•LO replaced existing infrastructure leased from
Cisco with an HP Converged Infrastructure solution that delivers voice over
internet protocol (VoIP) services and business applications at a lower cost
of ownership.

“We needed a vendor that could deliver a converged network on a scale
able to keep pace with our rapidly growing global business,” said Bart
Russell, IT manager, THOR•LO. “HP provided exactly what we were looking for
in a new network from initial hands-on services and support through
implementation and after-sale support. We knew HP would deliver an
outstanding solution, given our previous work with them, and once again HP
went above and beyond to meet our business needs.”

HP partner Insight,
an Arizona-based global provider of information technology, hardware,
software and service solutions, worked with THOR•LO on the deployment.
THOR•LO implemented an
HP MSM Dual Access Point Series wireless mobility products to provide a
robust, flexible unified network to simplify business processes and
HP P6300 Enterprise Virtual Arrays storage solutions THOR•LO had
previously deployed to provide a complete converged infrastructure that
enables the company to effectively manage its expanding global business.

THOR•LO also implemented the
HP Intelligent Management Center to simplify network management via a
single pane of glass for operating a unified wired and wireless network.

As a result of deploying HP networking solutions, THOR•LO has:

Streamlined business-wide communications by
replacing three disparate phone systems with a single VoIP
system;

Reduced costs by 70 percent with its new VoIP phone
system, which covered the cost of the HP networking solutions;

Improved employee productivity by automating time-intensive
and error-prone manual tasks with HP’s streamlined management
solutions; and

Simplified data center management by seamlessly
connecting HP networking solutions with existing HP server and
storage solutions.
